ProtoMechs are 'Mechs. Elementals, Battlesuits and the MechAssault Battle Armor are powered armor.

The distinction is more common sense than anything else. If it is a suit that you wear, that has some capability to propel itself, it's powered armor. If you operate it, it's a giant robot or mecha or whatever. That's like confusing an exoskeleton with an Abram's tank. You don't wear a tank, you drive it.

I think jovian chronicles did a good division of things.

if you wear it its a exo-suit obviously. Once big enough to pilot its not an exo suit anymore but a mech. if it is larger and you're inside but not wearing it but it still mimics your movement then it is an exo-frame.

So three variations. landmates still fall into the exo-frame or exo suit category depending on the specifics of how its operated.

I'm so happy that no one really knows what the hell that suit looks like. It'll make inventing bits of it easier without someone going "THAT'S INACCURATE".

we get most of our stuff from bumbling around google or boorus or pixiv or dA. So unless it's something one of us really knows a lot about, we don't know where the good stuff is (I don't think we actually have any regular sonic fans around here).
